On 02-24-2012 1707 hrs, The Township of Hamilton Police Department responded to Wrangleboro Road at Alexander Dr for a motor vehicle crash involving a Bus.
Upon arrival it was determined that a NJ Transit bus, driven by Jean Castor, 41, of Absecon, and a 2011 Silver Toyota Corolla, driven by Ellen Silverstein, 70, of Galloway, were involved in a head on collision.
The NJ transit bus had 11 occupants. Two of the occupants sustained injuries and were transported to Atlanticare Regional Medical Center – Mainland. Silverstein was entrapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by members of the Hamilton Township Rescue Squad and Cologne Volunteer Fire Company. Silverstein was later pronounced dead at Atlanticare Regional Medical Center as result of the injuries sustained in the crash
Wrangleboro Road was closed from Lombard Street to Tilton Road for two hours while the investigation was conducted and the scene was cleared of debris.
A Preliminary investigation has revealed that during a heavy down pour of rain, the NJ Transit bus was heading south on Wrangleboro Rd while Silberstein’s’ vehicle was heading north on Wrangleboro Rd. Silverstein’s vehicle crossed over a painted median located near Alexander Dr and into the southbound lane. Silverstein’s vehicle struck the bus offset head-on. Silverstein’s vehicle then spun and stopped facing East in the northbound lane. The NJ transit bus stopped in the southbound lane.
